Fazana and Valbandon are known for its fishing and anchovies and as a home port for Brijuni Archipelago.
Fazana and its waterfront remember many statesmen, politicians, and celebrities from the artistic and sporting life, economy and science, fashion and jet set. There were the Emperor Franz Joseph I, James Joyce, Thomas Mann, Douglas Fairbanks, Guillermo Marconi, Josip Broz Tito, Nehru, Naser, Indira Ghandi, Ho-Si-Min, Henry Kissinger, Queen Elizabeth II, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Mario del Monaco, Naomi Campbell, Plácido Domingo ...
Fazana name is linked with the old signs Phasiana and Vasianum. Often the roots places related to the terms pheasant, the Polish birds, or pottery.
The area was compared with "decorations on the head of pretty women" in late antiquity.
In waters around Fazana in the 1379 was led the naval battle between the two republics, Venice and Genoa. There were about 250 ships, with the defeat of Venetian fleet.
Fazana’s medieval town is today the old core round the parish church of St. Cosmo and Damian (XV century). Charm of Fazana is its squares, little houses facing each other in the narrow stone paved streets. Churches of St Mary of Caramel (IX. cent), St. John (XVI century) and St. Elisha (VI. cent) are part of the cultural heritage.
The owner of Brijuni, Viennese industrialist Paul Kupelwieser which first time came 1893 - return to the squalid life of the archipelago. He restores ancient splendor, actually surpassing it. After the engagement famous scientists and physicians – namely, the Nobel Prize winner - Robert Koch, malaria was eradicated and begins blooming Islands as a fashionable spa and resort.
Becoming Tito''s residence, Brijuni determined the lifestyle surrounding area. Fazana became a closed zone for foreigners.
Tourism started to develop after Brijuni became the National Park, in 1983.
Port and harbor today represent a magnificent stage where during the summer several cultural, musical events and folk festivals take place – especially ''''Fest of pilchards''''.
